QR digital menu: how it works and how much it costs

By · · 3 min read

A QR digital menu is your restaurant’s menu turned into a web page. Customers scan a code printed on the table with their phone camera and instantly see the dishes, descriptions and prices, without downloading anything.

In this article I explain how it works, what it needs to be truly comfortable on a phone and what its price depends on.

How it works

The system has two parts:

  1. The menu page. A website with your categories, dishes and prices, designed to be read on a small screen.
  2. The QR code. An image that stores the address of that page. It’s printed once and placed on tables, at the entrance or at the counter.

Since the QR code only points to the address, anything you change later in the menu (a price, a new dish, a deal) shows up when people scan the same code. Nothing needs to be reprinted.

Advantages over a printed menu

  • Prices always up to date. You change it once and everyone sees it, at the table and outside the restaurant.
  • Easy to share on WhatsApp and Instagram. The menu has its own link, so you answer “can you send me the menu?” with a message instead of photos of the printed one.
  • Less printing. Printed menus wear out and go out of date with every price change.

What a good digital menu needs

A digital menu isn’t just putting the menu online. To help customers find what they want quickly, it should have:

  • Clear categories (starters, mains, drinks…) and navigation between them.
  • Search, especially if the menu is long.
  • Fast loading on mobile data. If it’s slow, customers get bored and call the waiter.
  • Visible prices next to each dish.
  • A button to message you on WhatsApp, useful for orders and delivery.

For example, the menu I built for Don Chaker organizes 15 categories, has dish search and a deals section.

PDF or web page?

Many restaurants start by uploading a PDF of their menu. It works, but on a phone people have to zoom in to read, it’s heavier and you can’t search for a dish. A page built for mobile fits the screen and scrolls with a finger like any website.

How much does a QR digital menu cost?

A QR digital menu costs between 100 and 200 USD and is usually ready in about a week from when you send me the menu. The price mainly depends on:

  • How many dishes and categories the menu has.
  • Whether you need search, photos or several languages.
  • Who updates the prices: whether you change them yourself from a panel or send them to me to update.
  • Whether it includes the QR design ready to print for the tables.

Conclusion

A QR digital menu solves two everyday problems: the outdated menu and the “can you send me the menu?” question. If you have a restaurant, café or food business, see how I build the QR digital menu or email me and we’ll look at your case.

Frequently asked questions

Do customers need to download an app to see the menu?

No. The QR code opens a web page in the phone's browser. Pointing the camera at the code is enough.

Do I have to reprint the QR code if I change a price?

No. The code only stores the menu's address. You change the price on the page and the same QR code shows the new information.

Does a PDF of the menu work as a digital menu?

It works, but it's hard to read on a phone. People have to zoom in, it's heavier and it has no search or categories. A page built for mobile is more comfortable for the customer.
